James Gunn’s kick-off to the DC Universe (DCU) is a smashing success with the wonderfully funny, action-packed and emotionally impactful animated series, Creature Commandos.
Gunn was obviously influenced by Amazon’s Invincible (a compliment) in terms of tone, visual style and omnipresent bloody carnage. The structure of an overarching narrative, paired with individual, sympathetic origin stories for each character, yields a potent combination for effective superhero storytelling.
My absolute favorite thing about this first season was David Harbour as Frankenstein; utterly delightful! Not everything lands perfectly, but it’s just a damn good time.
