The first season of Gen V was a nicely done collegiate spin-off of The Boys: X-rated X-Men Academy with blood, guts, sex, social/political commentary, and non-stop social media livestreams. It had solid connectivity to the Homelander/Vought lore, but also carved a new path for young supes trying to discover themselves.
Unfortunately, Gen V season 2 suffers from the classic “sophomore slump.” The writing is more corny. The pacing drags more. The societal critiques are relevant, but superficial. All aspects behind and in front of the camera take steps backward, to varying degrees. Which is a shame, because The Boys has built up so much fandom and goodwill over the course of its first 4 seasons. There’s a higher degree of explicit connectivity to The Boys, which sets up future stakes in the universe across both shows. But it still felt ham-fisted in execution.
With all its faults, Gen V season 2 still delivers enough entertainment value to stay invested, even if passively or even begrudgingly. The conspiratorial mystery remains front and center which yields engaging intrigue. The chemistry between characters is strengthened as all of their respective arcs have matured. And as is tried and true attributes to this universe, there’s still plenty of jaw-dropping raunchy gags.
Gen V season 2 is a disappointment compared to the first and doesn’t increase my excitement for the next installment. But it’s good enough to watch if you’re a fan of The Boys and are trying to keep up with the storytelling.
