It’s wild to think that Christopher Nolan wanted Katie Holmes to reprise her Batman Begins role as Rachel Dawes for The Dark Knight, but she chose a different path. The role of course ended up going to Maggie Gyllenhaal, but Nolan said that he wanted her for the role and she “wasn’t available.”
Nolan continued:
Katie wasn’t available for the role, which I wasn’t very happy about, but these things happen, and I was very, very fortunate that Maggie [Gyllenhaal] was able to take it over.
The Dark Knight of course went on to gross $1 billion at the global box office. It was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won 2, including posthums Best Supporting actor for Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as The Joker. Instead of returning to work with Nolan, Holmes decided to go with this film (featured in our Instagram video below): the 2008 comedy Mad Money, co-starring Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah.
