From creators Mindy Kaling and Ike Barinholtz, Running Point is a funny and clever sports comedy series inspired by the life and career of Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. Kate Hudson’s commanding and charming lead performance really stands out and reminds us of her skills as an actress, especially in the romantic comedy realm. She was just fantastic.
And as with any good comedy series, the bench of the supporting cast is deep, from Drew Tarver to Brenda Song, all of whom have distinctly engaging character identities and arcs. The chemistry and shenanigans between the cast is delightful, delivering some genuine LOL moments.
The greatest weakness of the show is the lack of polish when it comes to the presentation of its fictional NBA. One of the players whose character is at the center of the dramatic turmoil is gratingly miscast (Travis). And the execution of the basketball play itself is observably subpar. They had to have shot all game sequences in a small gym in a single day. It was distracting. Additionally, the attempts at endearing sweetness hits more than misses, but the misses approach the edge of being overly cheesy.
In the end, Running Point is a highly entertaining, watchable and funny comedy series that is primed to being binged while brightening your day.
