At 41 years old and with four feature films under his belt, writer/director Robert Eggers has established himself as one of the most interesting craftsman of unsettling horror among his generation. With his penchant for effectively creating atmospheres of trauma-fueled dread combined with beautiful and disturbing imagery, he’s created a distinct cinematic language for himself and audiences.
I do think it’s worth noting that critics appear to like his films more than audiences do, according to the respective Rotten Tomatoes scores featured below.
While I wasn’t blown away by Nosferatu, I did (as always) appreciate the striking craft he carefully put into the film from an audiovisual standpoint. And I look forward to his future endeavors as an auteur.
