The Tenet
Art is subjective. So that means movies and TV are, too. The state of the modern internet could not be more toxic, and that goes double within the world of entertainment; where authentic, respectful discourse is sabotaged by trolls and haters who seek to stoke negativity. But that really sucks. It’s not the way it should be.
We have strong opinions. When we love something, we will let you know. When we hate something, we will let you know. But we judge the art, not the audience. We will explain in detail why we adored that new movie or could not stand that new show. If you disagree, great! Tell us why and let’s have a healthy conversation about it.
Moreover, takes on the pop culture internet favor the extreme: “THIS MOVIE SUCKED” or “THIS IS SHOW IS A MASTERPIECE.” Less and less, we are not seeing any room in between for nuance or critical analysis. Most things are neither horrible, nor amazing. They’re just OK. We strive to always provide a measured and balanced approach to criticism and will never hype something up or down unless we passionately believe so.
That’s what The Screen Mash is trying to do and is all about: being confident and articulate in our opinions, while respecting those of everyone else.
